Legionella seems to be hitting the news a little too often at them moment, but what do we know about it and why is it so dangerous?
Legionella bacteria causes a serious lung infection called Legionnaires’ disease. Initial symptoms can be confused with flu-like symptoms such as mild headaches, high temperature, chills, muscles pain, confusion and tiredness. Once the bacteria develops and infects your lungs you may also notice symptoms know to pneumonia such as a persistent cough, shortness of breath and chest pains. Should you develop the symptoms above you should seek medical attention from your GP as soon as possible.
Where does it come from?
Legionella bacteria is usually found in often in harmless amounts in ponds, rivers and lakes. However the bacteria rapidly multiplies when it comes in contact with artificial water systems such as air-conditioning.
This makes large buildings such as schools, hospitals, shopping centers, hotels, offices, museums, spa’s, food plants and swimming pools more susceptible to contamination as they have large, complex water supplies.
Less than you would think! Legionella bacteria likes a water temperature of between 20-45C (68-113F) and water with impurities for the bacteria to feed on such as rust, algae and lime scale.
Am I at risk?
Although Legionnaires’ disease is rare in the UK, precautions are sensible. Especially if you run a big business as we mentioned earlier. The NHS reports ‘During 2011 to 2013, there were 84 deaths from Legionnaires’ disease in England and Wales (including overseas travellers)’.
How to test for it?
There are many companies out their offering the testing of water samples. But these can take weeks and weeks in a lab and if you are a company, school, care home or local authority can you really afford to wait that long? Wouldn’t it be so much easier and cheaper to do it yourself? So why cant you?
